Couple fined for starving pups

The couple, from Herberton, west of Cairns, was convicted in the Atherton Magistrates Court yesterday of several charges under the Animal Care and Protection Act.

Officers from Biosecurity Queensland seized five horses and a number of dogs from the property after the owners ignored a number of directions to ensure they received better care.

A Biosecurity Queensland spokesman said a litter of pups seized from the property were so malnourished they needed to be put down.

The horses are still being cared for by officers.

The spokesman said the property was on poor grazing land and the couple failed to provide sufficient food for the animals.

Magistrate Kerry McFadden fined the couple $7000 each and imposed a prohibition order on both defendants preventing them from owning horses and dogs for five years.

A north Queensland couple who allowed a litter of puppies to become so malnourished they needed to be put down have been fined $14,000.

    It’s NOT enough punishment….they will do it again & again…..they need stronger laws to stop this from happening……Animals have to be protected from people like this……make an example to all that this will not be tolerated in our society…….

    you really should not believe everything in newspapers, it failed to say they took 4 dogs previously and they went back to this couple with missing tail and gashes and stitches, they put a horse down and still have not told this couple that its been put down where is their duty of care
