Fines from illegal puppy farms will help fund a new animal welfare program to care for neglected pets.

The State Government is committing $1.6 million to the fund to help animal shelters and welfare agencies rescue abandoned animals.

Treasurer Kim Wells says the proceeds from penalties and seizures of illegal puppy farms is unpredictable, but the Government is guaranteeing $400,000 each year, for four years.

“Under the Minister for Agriculture’s authority we’ve been able to increase fines, increase inspections and have a situation now where we’re able to be on top of the illegal puppy farms and we think that’s a good move,” he said.

the best way to prevent neglected Pets in the first place is to shut down ALL Puppy farms. We DONT want Pets to suffer = prevention is better than ‘cure’.

What`s agriculture got to do with this issue ?????

Course it’s a good move..any move to save animals is good…most puppy farms are illegal & they need to be shut down..instead of allowing them to over populate pet shops, internet, paper & just dumping them anywhere….these animals need to be protected from puppy farmers who exploit them…Animal welfare program will do this if it is done properly….the money going to where it should go, to the animals….let them get the benefit from the fines these inhumane people have to pay….it’s about time that the government came down hard on these money making puppy farmers…..the conditions that these dogs live in to reproduce puppies over & over again is disgusting….some government officials should go & see some of these places where these dogs are kept & just see the conditions that they are living in….why are these animals allowed to suffer just for people to make money… time for a change….how many puppy farms has the government closed down????
